Many back surgery patients choose chiropractic care for acute pain management. Through spinal manipulation, trained chiropractors provide an alternative to physical therapy, prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs, acupuncture, and deep-tissue massage.
Chiropractic care is not limited to acute pain management, however. Although some chiropractors refer to themselves as back specialists or even neck specialists, others suggest spinal manipulation as a cure for asthma and allergies. In this sense, chiropractic care can be more similar to alternative medicine and unconventional cures.
According to the New England Journal of Medicine, patients with acute low back pain can find some relief from spinal manipulation. Neck manipulation can be dangerous, however, and patients are often advised to limit their chiropractic care to the treatment of back pain and other musculoskeletal problems.
